Eugene VeganFest Eco-Policy
The Eugene VeganFest is stiving to be a zero waste event. We always keep consideration for the planet forefront in our minds and strive to reduce our impact in organizing and executing our event. You can help! Bring your water bottle and your own travel mug, bowls, flatware, cloth napkin, etc. Come prepared and reduce the waste generated at the event. Thank you for being part of the solution and for caring about the Earth and her animals.
Our efforts in striving to be a zero-waste event:
- We have a no-plastics policy for all vendors. We encourage vendors to use compostable and eco materials whenever possible and we don’t allow plastic water bottles to be sold or given away. We do make some exceptions for food vendors who have a pre-packaged item in plastic with a label (like hummus for instance).
-
This year, we are participating in the Sustainable Events Program offered by the City of Eugene and renting a refillable water station and non-disposable 16 & 22 oz. glasses, forks, and spoons. This is an opt-in program for food vendors who want to participate. Please thank those that are participating!
- We are providing a compost bin for food scraps to reduce our landfill impact.
- We encourage attendees to bring their own travel mugs, plates, flatware, and cloth napkins to further reduce waste.
- Eating vegan has significant ecological reduction of an individual’s carbon footprint, so the harm reduced over all by the event with 7 vegan food court vendors and 16 vegan food and beverage vendors in the vendor hall is immense. Anyone out there want to try to calculate how much? We would love that!
Eugene VeganFest Safe Space Policy
The Eugene VeganFest wants all our attendees to have a wonderful time free of any harassment, intimidation, or uncomfortable interactions. As such, we strive to promote principles of fairness and equity in relation to race, age, color, disability, faith, religion, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, sex, sexual orientation, social class, economic class, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, and all other identities.
We must all work together to make sure that the Eugene VeganFest is safe and comfortable space for all individuals so we have developed the following guidelines to address inappropriate behavior at the Eugene VeganFest:
- Inappropriate behavior that is prohibited may include, but is not limited to: behavior that is racist, sizeist, sexist, transphobic, queerphobic, ableist, xenophobic, ageist, and homophobic. Inappropriate behavior includes sarcasm as well as unwillingness to listen to and learn from others’ experiences.
- If you feel that you have been subjected to inappropriate behavior or discrimination, you should report the incident to Eugene VeganFest Manger Hope Bohanec. (hope@compassionate-living.org / 707-540-1760). Someone else may also report on your behalf. There will be no retaliation against any person who reports the behavior.
- If someone questions your behavior, the event manager will speak with you. You may be given a verbal warning and you may be asked to leave the event. If inappropriate behavior continues and/or is reported again, you may be prohibited from attending future Eugene VeganFests.
This policy is a work in progress and we invite feedback on how to create safer spaces for all individuals.
Come join us as we share, learn, grow, eat and enjoy
A Message from Hope Bohanec, Eugene VeganFest Organizer
Our Personal Choices Effect the Whole Planet
The current tumultuous political climate has left many in our community feeling powerless and vulnerable. Amidst climate disaster, health and well- being declines, and rampant injustices, we are now confronted with the reality that relying on government or legislation to effect positive change in the near future is likely futile. However, there are choices we can make and daily actions we can take to alleviate suffering, support the planet, and nurture our bodies. It’s crucial that we collectively work on a grassroots level to effect the necessary changes for our survival on planet Earth. Personal choices hold immense power, and one of the most significant and far-reaching choices we can make every day is the food we choose to eat.
Many people agree that our food system is broken and that it harms workers, animals, and the environment. As more people wake up to animal exploitation, the epidemic of degenerative disease, the climate crisis, food insecurity, and other negative impacts, veganism offers a solution. At its core, vegan living is an economic boycott of a cruel, unsustainable, and harmful industry. However, vegan philosophy transcends this to also encompass a social justice strategy for a just, global food system as well as a profound appeal for nonviolence and compassion for all living beings on the planet.
Vegan living helps to considerably reduce one’s climate footprint, promotes social justice for those lacking access to healthy foods, reduces the risk of chronic degenerative diseases for vulnerable populations, and can help potentially avert the next pandemic—just by extending our compassion to all sentient beings. Veganism reminds us just how political food is. Scientific research overwhelmingly demonstrates that producing food from animals has a significantly greater environmental and climate impact compared to producing food from plants with equivalent dietary value. These studies consistently show that, regardless of the production method or product label, plant-based foods repeatedly require less water, energy, fossil fuel, and generate substantially fewer greenhouse gas emissions than comparable calories of meat, dairy, and eggs. Eating plant-based is eating planet-based.
Experts agree that we need both systemic and individual behavior change to support a global transition to plant-based diets to mitigate climate disaster and alleviate numerous other harmful impacts of animal farming and animal products. While working to create systemic change is crucial—it’s incredibly challenging and agonizingly slow. Individual actions that support and demand these larger shifts can happen now, today, with your next meal. Every day, I am inspired to harness the collective power of our plates. Together, we can dismantle oppressive systems of violence and alleviate immense suffering. Please live vegan.
